Caring for Our Aging Pets

Let's face it...We're not getting any younger, nor are our pets! With age comes wisdom...and sometimes health issues! Let's discuss some ways to help our pets with some common aging issues so he lives a full and active life well into his senior years.

1. Dealing With Arthritis and Joint Health:One of the most common ailments in an aging pet is arthritis. Even mild arthritis, joint stiffness and pain can cause a slowing down of regular activity and even sleep issues because of discomfort. Add to this a few extra pounds due to the lack of regular activity and this can become a real health issue. To help your pet through the stiff joints that come with aging, keep them at an optimum weight. Feeding a high meat protein diet is essential to keeping the muscle while losing the fat. 2. Proper Hydration:Proper hydration is also key to joint health so make sure your grandma or grandpa pet has enough clean water daily. And, adding antioxidants which are good anti-inflammatories to your pet's diet as well. Keep in mind that addressing these issues in a natural, nutritional way can take a few weeks to turn things around. But, being aware of your pet's food and adding quality supplements are great steps toward joint health and you may again see that old spring in his step!

3. Brain Function:Both dogs and cats can develop learning and memory problems as they get age. Research shows that even our pets can have dementia.
